Hey guys

So you might not know but I've been writing for the organisation "A Safe World for Women" who advocates women and children's rights across the globe.

My first article had been published online recently! It's about Australian attitudes towards asylum seekers. If you want, you can read it here:

http://www.asafeworldforwomen.org/womens-rights/wr-asia-pacific/wr-australia/2886-australia-detention-centres.html

It's quite lengthy and a bit dry...but then how else can you describe asylum seekers?? ;)

CAKE BOSS

If you love eating, love humour and most definitely LOVE cake, then you are going to love watching CAKE BOSS!

If you've been following my blog, you would remember that I did a post on the Ace of Cakes awhile back, but I have recently discovered an even better cake-making show. A few months ago, my sister emailed me with a link to a youtube video for the show Cake Boss. This was during a period when I was very busy so I decided to bookmark the page. Now that uni exams are over, I decided to do a little bit of "spring cleaning" starting with the computer. I was deleting some junk bookmarks that I had made over the past six months when I came across this link. Seeing that I had nothing better to do, I decided to give the show a go and I haven't looked back.

The Cake Boss follows the ins and outs of Carlo's Bakery in New Jersey, America. It was founded in 1910 and is currently run by third generation Bartolo Valastro Jr. aka Buddy. It is almost entirely family-run with Buddy's four sisters out the front on the register and various brother in-laws, cousins, nephews out in the back making the cakes. Each episode, they concentrate on the making of two or three 'speciality' cakes. These are cakes that people had pre-ordered with a certain theme ranging from 'cage-fighting' to 'roller-blading'.

However what sets this show apart from other cake-making shows is that since the bakery is family-run, there are many arguments, funny moments and annoying moments, all which are embellished by their "Italian flair". Mistakes are aired including dropping the cake down a flight of stairs and even a minor car crash while delivering a cake! Even though there must have been cameras following their every move, there isn't that sense of "acting" as such but of genuine determination and emotions. They would literally argue but make-up because of their love and affection for each other because as Buddy always says "in the end, we love each other because we're family".

By the end of watching each episode, I just feel like making cake or better yet, eating cake! The show actually debuted in 2009 so I'm already behind on this but I would definitely encourage you to watch this awesome show!

PRICE WARS

Deciding to study commerce at uni has made more aware of the happenings in my day-to-day shopping life.

Yesterday, as part of the MyerOne scheme, I received an email from Myer informing me about massive sales that are going to occur on Saturday/the weekend. There was discounts ranging from 40% off Bonds underwear to 30% off the Miss Shop clothing line - offers only available on Saturday. A few hours later and I receive a facebook notification from David Jones, notifying me that THEY will be having Saturday-only discount offers, much like Myer. Like Myer, they advertised 40% off Bonds underwear and 30% off Ben Sherman clothing.

So naturally after work (and after the renewal of my David Jones discount card!) I go shopping to find myself a bargain. (I didn't really buy much though...). So after David Jones, I head over to Myer because I know that their prices are more within my price range! The good thing about doing this was that because David Jones and Myer are on opposite ends of Westfield, I got the chance to naturally walk pass other clothing stores and it seems like ALL clothing retailers were having a massive sale! For example Dotti was advertising $5 shirts and jackets which had been reduced to $39.95, Witchery was having a 25% off sale store wide, Betts had a 50% off second item sale and even Sportscraft had a 25% off storewide sale!

Today, for whatever reason, it seemed that coincidentally, everyone was having a sale! And I can only attribute this to price wars and the increase in consumer everyone is trying to get a hold of!

Overall, after my enlightening shopping experience, I only ended up going home with two shirts and a scarf. It seems that whenever I go shopping for a purpose i.e. to actually look and buy something, I never end up looking for anything interesting. Whereas when I randomly go shopping and I don't actually want to buy anything, I end up buying a whole lot of stuff! But honestly, there is actually nothing much to buy when a sale is on. Perhaps I was too late and everyone else had already gotten their hands on the best buys or maybe I'm just giving myself an excuse to save money...for the new Macbook!!!! :D

I was going through the news feed on facebook and I came across a video link that someone posted on their friends wall. The video is titled "Coldplay - Paradise (Peponi) African Style (Piano/Cello Cover) ThePianoGuys". The word 'cello' instantly caught my eye (as you probably know that I used to play the cello).

Watching this video actually gave me inspiration for playing the cello again. I stopped lessons at the end of year 11 and officially stopped playing at the end of term 3 in year 12 - the only reason being that I was too scared to leave orchestra ;)

I don't know about you, but watching other people play makes ME want to play, be-it the piano or the cello. I WISH that I could be as awesome as them but when I actually start practising and realise I suck, I give-up (as you do...). BUT I'm going to persevere this time and hopefully after finals, I will have the motivation to whip out my cello...

In the meantime, have a listen to this awesome video:
